Peel public schools celebrate Education Week 2004

Peel public schools will host hundreds of special activities and events to celebrate Education Week 2004. To give schools plenty of time to hold activities, this celebration of education will be held for two weeks from April 19 to 30. The theme for this year's focus on education is Helping Students Soar.

"Public schools are places where children can learn and grow - where students can be accepted and nurtured. With the help of parents and school staff, they will reach new goals and expand their personal horizons," says Jim Grieve, director of education. "Our theme, 'Helping Students Soar,' reminds us why, despite everything else that's happening in the world, we have reason to celebrate during Education Week. And that is because we encourage the best from our students."

In addition to inviting parents and community residents to visit their classrooms during the week, Peel schools are hosting concerts, plays, art displays, literacy festivals, story telling, environmental activities, science and math demonstrations and much more.

The board will honour 35 individuals with Awards of Excellence. The award recipients are students, volunteers, staff and community partners who have made outstanding contributions to public education in Peel. The awards will be presented at the Showcase of Excellence ceremony on April 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the board room, HJA Brown Education Centre, 5650 Hurontario St., Mississauga.

More than 440 individuals will also be honoured during Education Week with Awards of Distinction for their contributions to their school.

Board approves new "Fresh Start" alternative program

The Peel board approved that three teachers establish the "Fresh Start" program for students under principal expulsion and that the costs be incorporated in the 2004-05 budget. "Fresh Start" will provide a range of interventions with primary focus on the individual needs of each student in order to prepare them for successful return to school. Program components will include counselling, anger management, self management skills, drug reduction counselling, problem solving, life skills, work experience and vocational training as appropriate. In addition, students will have an individually designed academic program and transition plan. Community agencies will provide support programs to groups and individuals in transition.
