Peel and Dufferin-Peel Catholic school boards partner to host Terry Fox Run
The Peel District School Board and Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will participate in a Terry Fox Foundation pilot event on Sept. 24, 2004. The day will be celebrated with special activities that provide students, staff and the community with an opportunity to raise funds for The Terry Fox Foundation. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Terry's Marathon of Hope in 2005, every school in Canada will be invited to participate on the same day. Presently, over 4,500 schools in Canada host Terry Fox Runs.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for Peel students to become involved in a region-wide community event," says Janet McDougald, chair of the board. "The pilot has the board's full support. Trustees will encourage schools in our communities to participate and we will aim for 100 per cent participation."
On Sept. 24, every student in the Region of Peel and the county of Dufferin will be encouraged to participate in a unified effort to raise awareness and funds for The Terry Fox Foundation. A number of Mississauga private schools will also take part in the pilot. That day, schools will be shown a live television broadcast featuring interviews with Terry's parents, brother, and a number of cancer survivors. Students will also see video footage of Terry's life. Following this, all students will participate simultaneously in Terry Fox events at their school.
School events may include runs, walks or any other fundraising activity of their choice. By participating in The Terry Fox Run, students demonstrate that running and walking will help raise funds to ease the suffering caused by cancer.
