Description of community agency/organization: Animal Aid Foundation is a volunteer-based, community-based organization whose mission is to address the issue of animal overpopulation and homeless pets by financially supporting the veterinary medical care programs of local animal charities. The Foundation does not have paid staff and does not receive government funding. It raises money through community fundraising events and relies on volunteer contributions, public donations and corporate support.
What you will do: The Animal Aid Foundation Read For Pets® Charity Used Book Sale is the Foundation’s signature special event and one of the fastest growing events in Peel Region. The June 4th sale will take place in Centre Plaza in Streetsville (between Tim Hortons and Gino’s Pizza), during the Bread and Honey Festival. Students have a choice of helping to organize the event the night before, set up the event the day of, volunteering during the event and helping to clean up afterwards, both at the event site and the following day at our storage facility. This event appeals to both male and female students. Volunteer spots are limited. Sign up early to avoid disappointment.
Skills required:
Responsible: You are expected to show up and work during each of the shifts you sign up for. Please be on time and do your best during your shift.
Ability to follow direction: We will show you what to do. You just need to follow direction and ask questions if the instructions are not clear to you.
Energy and Hard Work: Special events require a lot of energy and hard work. Please come prepared.
Outgoing and articulate: Students who sign up to hand out promotional bookmarks and bring customers into the sale need to be friendly and outgoing.
Skills you will learn: In addition to earning your volunteer hours, you will learn customer service skills, witness behind the scene work that goes into organizing a large-scale community fundraising event and feel the personal satisfaction of volunteering your time for a worthy cause.

FRIDAY JUNE 3rd

5:30 pm to 8:30 p.m.--loading the truck at the Mini Storage Facility located at 2885 Sherwood Heights Drive, Oakville L6J 7H1 (Winston Churchill, just south of the QEW on the Missisauga/Oakville border – Oakville side). Students must be in good physical condition and able to lift 30 to 50 lb boxes. Meet volunteer representative outside the security gates at 5:30 sharp.
SATURDAY JUNE 4th
All shifts on the day of the event will take place in Centre Plaza in Streetsville. To mapquest directions to the site please use 128 Queen Street South,Mississauga.
SHIFT # 1A: 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. -- 10 volunteer spots available
a) 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. Students will set up tables and tents
SHIFT # 1B: 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. --20 volunteer spots available
Students will take boxes off the truck and take each box to the appropriate table. Once the truck is unloaded, working in pairs, students will open each box, put the lid under the box and put the box back onto the table.
SHIFT # 2: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. – 8 volunteer spots available
RUNNERS: Working in pairs, students will carry customer purchases to their cars. Students must be in good physical condition for this shift and be able to carry 20 to 30 lb boxes/bags. 4 volunteer spots available.
PROMOTION: Students will walk around HANDING OUT BOOKMARKS to the public to help promote the book sale. Students signing up for this task need to be articulate, outgoing and friendly. 4 volunteer spots available.
SHIFT # 3: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. – 20 volunteer spots available
RUNNERS: Working in pairs, students will carry customer purchases to their cars. Students must be in good physical condition for this shift and be able to carry 20 to 30 lb boxes/bags. 10 volunteer spots available.
PROMOTION: Students will walk around HANDING OUT BOOKMARKS to the public to help promote the book sale. Students signing up for this task need to be articulate, outgoing and friendly. 10 volunteer spots available.
SHIFT # 4: 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – 18 volunteer spots available
RUNNERS: Working in pairs, students will carry customer purchases to their cars. Students must be in good physical condition for this shift and be able to carry 20 to 30 lb boxes/bags. 4 volunteer spots available.
PROMOTION: Students will walk around HANDING OUT BOOKMARKS to the public to help promote the book sale. Students signing up for this task need to be articulate, outgoing and friendly. 4 volunteer spots available.
TIDYING TABLES: Students will make sure books are in the correct subject areas AND make sure that books are sitting below the rim of the boxes they are in so that the boxes can be closed without damaging the books. 10 volunteer spots available.
SHIFT # 5: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. – 30 volunteer spots available
Students will help to close the sale by closing boxes, carrying the boxes to the truck, folding up tables, packing up the tents, etc.
SUNDAY JUNE 5TH
4 volunteer spots available
