Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief
Founded in 1984, CPAR works in partnership with vulnerable communities and diverse organizations to overcome poverty and build healthy communities in Africa. These partnerships build healthy communities by working with rural community members to attain food security, adequate access to clean water and sanitation, access to primary health care, and by helping them co-exist with the environment in a sustainable way. All of these factors (and other things) are interconnected; and this is important in community-based development projects.
Key to CPAR’s approach to community development is solidarity between the North and the South. Development projects should not be disempowering to anyone involved. Projects – be they rainwater harvesting projects or farmer field schools – should be created, implemented, managed, and evaluated by all partners. Individual community members and Community-Based Organisations thus form the foundation of CPAR projects. They also form the basis of CPAR staff.
Paul Tucker is CPAR’s Public Engagement coordinator and is experienced in public speaking on many development issues. He is experienced in addressing both teachers and students in an interactive fashion. He has worked in Tanzania and South Africa. In these roles he worked with rural communities in education and water issues (respectively). He also holds an Honours Degree in International Development Studies and a Master’s Degree in Political Science.
