Ministry’s School Food and Beverage Policy encourages healthy eating

The Ministry of Education’s School Food and Beverage Policy encourages students to make healthier choices by removing less-healthy food and beverage options from schools. Beginning Sept. 1, 2011, all food and beverages offered for sale in publicly funded schools in Ontario must meet the nutrition standards set out in the policy.

Here are some of the changes you may notice at elementary schools:

  • The menu for prepared lunch days may change.
  • Bake sales may be held on fewer days during the year.
  • Candy, chocolate and other foods and beverages that do not meet the requirements of the policy will not be sold at schools.

Here are some of the changes you may notice at secondary schools:

  • The cafeteria menu will change—many of the same food items will still be offered, but will be made in a more healthy way.
  • Food and drink choices in vending machines will change. Drinks with caffeine will not be sold to students.

The nutrition standards in the policy are based on the principles of healthy eating outlined in Canada’s Food Guide. Research has shown that children who eat a healthy diet are more attentive, more ready to learn and more likely to be successful in school.

It’s important for you to know that the policy does not apply to food and beverages brought from home—only food and beverages sold to students at school. The implementation of this policy creates a good opportunity to explore healthy food options as a family. More information about the policy is available on the Ministry of Education's website.
