Welcome to Peel
Are you new to our school board or Canada? Are you looking for a place to register your child for school? Do you want to learn about the education system, and settlement options in your community? The Welcome Centre is the best place to start.

The Peel District School Board opened three Welcome Centres, in Brampton, Malton, and Mississauga to welcome your family to Peel and get your children registered for school. Call 905-366-8791 to book an appointment at the location that is most convenient for you:

The Welcome Centre is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., all year round. Families can get assistance from staff in many languages.

The We Welcome the World Centres are funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). CIC provides funding for programs that help newcomers overcome barriers and obtain useful information in a timely manner to make informed settlement related decisions. These programs also encourage them to build networks within their communities and to participate fully in Canadian society.

Services
The Welcome Centre offers many free services. While at the welcome centre you can:

  • receive an orientation interview,to assist us in registering your child for school
  • get information about education in Ontario, the Peel District School Board, your role in school, and how to help your child succeed
  • learn about adult education and English classes
  • get referrals to community groups (i.e. employment and training, housing, health care)
  • learn about volunteering in Canada, and making connections with your community
  • access computers with Internet access

While you are visiting one of our Welcome Centres, we have staff who can look after your children, giving you the time you need to talk to us and use the services.

Orientation Interviews
Many newcomer students make an appointment for an orientation interview, when registering for school.
This is not a test. There are no marks or grades. So there is no need for students to prepare.

To start, we will meet with your family to discuss your child’s school history, personal goals and interests. This part of the process usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Your child will also show their understanding of Mathematics and English (verbal, reading, and writing), to help us create the best plan for your child’s school success. This process can take one to two hours for students in primary grades, and two to three hours for students in high school.

The information gathered during the orientation interview is sent to your child’s school to assist with registration.
